The 2016 Mural Project was installed in the WE CARE Facility (Currently Pro-Care). The facility offers physical, occupational, and speech therapies for patients of all ages. Services include sensory integration, early intervention, and support groups. Murals Talk partnered with We Care (ProCare), and therapist Kristan Zolanski, and visited 5 elementary schools in the Blair County region. Each school has an opportunity to work on a panel to be incorporated into the sensory therapy mural. The mural consists of visual stimulations (vibrant colors, patterns, and lights), textural stimulations, (carpet, sand paper, textured wall paper, sponges, squishy balls, and carpet remnants), along with sound stimulation.
During the process, Kristan spoke to the school children about sensory disorders. She shared details about the special needs some of their peers may have and how difficult it can be for them to function in a normal environment. She stressed to the general student population that while they do have these differences, much of their lives are still the same as everyone else. Many want to have friends, have dreams and goals, and have fears about acceptance. She shared ways students could help by accepting the differences, supporting them through their challenges, and to simply be kind. The students were introduced to some of their classmates and other students with special needs and they collectively, side-by-side created the mural. Students helped paint, cut, glue, draw, and assemble the pieces of the mural, and their interactions were priceless!
The mural was then assembled in the sensory therapy room at the We Care facility, and can be incorporated into therapy sessions on a regular basis.
