The 2018 Mural Project now hangs on the walls of the 'family room' in UPMC Altoona's Pediatric Care Unit. The mural entitled Reach for the Stars was created by 6th graders at Juniata Gap Elementary School to help inspire sick children to fight through their illness. The students learned a number of techniques including drawing, paper cutting, decoupage, and painting. Children discussed what it might be like to spend 1 night, 2 nights, weeks, or even months in the hospital. Some students bravely shared their own stories with classmates about times they were in the hospital themselves. Many times other students were completely unaware their peer had gone through such trauma. Those who had spent time in the hospital shared what might have made them feel better and a lot of the imaginative imagery and bold coloration came from the imagination of the children and the discussions they had together.
